Meredith, you might not want to buy a new iron but wanted to tell you about one that the Vermont Country Store sells. It is a dry iron with new wholes that gives you a smoother finish and just use a spray bottle of water if you want steam. I can't remember what professional teacher recommended the iron...I am thinking Harriet Hargrave. Here is the link: http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/Shop

Don't have to worry about holes clogging up!

Can't you get the descaler for irons over there? I always used to extend the life of my iron several times before I gave up on it and got a new one.

I have to say though, that I feel very nostalgic about the first iron I had, it lasted 19 years, and even then had to bite the dust because I dropped it and broke the handle. They don't make them like that any more. Sigh.

I am a brand new newbie and have not made a quilt yet. Can I still start this although I am only about a year behind? In other words will this infor be up for a while still?

I'm sure I will be just loaded with questions as time goes by.

    Thanks.

Hi There! ...and welcome! I am sort of a newbie to the DJ board too. I am not that far along with my DJ. Maybe 30 blocks done. The ladies here have been very helpful and assured me they would still be around for awhile. I am sure more newbies will be joining and worse case scenario we can all learn and help from each other! So glad you are joining us!

Thanks Elizabeth for the link, they have an iron that does look very nice, and quite retro! :D

Lesley, I am not in "like" with this iron, I loved the one before that I had for many years. This one, I just have not connected with, the controls are awkard and the bottom is already showing a lot of wear, it is only about 5 years old. The steamer has always shot out water uneven, honestly, I said steam, but I use a spray bottle most of the time instead of the steamer. I was so startled when I saw all the water deposits in the holes!

Crafty and Blinky, I doubt if any of us DJers will be going anywhere for a good while, the original schedule isn't due to come to an end until early summer if my memory serves, and there is a lot of info within this thread for anyone wanting to read it, so I would hope it doesn't get 'wiped' or anything, though with a new owner, we will have to see - I was encouraged that our new admin said that things weren't going to change.

I have to say that I don't think I would have been brave enough to try making this quilt as a Newbie, so all I can advise you to do Crafty, is to try a couple of blocks and see how you get on. If you make four and don't think its for you, then at least you could make those four blocks into a cushion!

I made one block today! I am so thankful I learned to paper piece a couple of weeks ago. Sure makes some of these little blocks easier!

Blinky, I'm not brave enough to even try this quilt without paper piecing! I think you will appreciate it even more as you make more blocks. Crafty...I don't think any of us are going anywhere...so jump on it..we'll be happy to help and you can look at all the threads for each week and pick up lots of tips too.

I thought ya'll might like to see how mine is going together and how the trapunto is going...I love how it is looking so far. I hope to do the trapunto work on the other 3 borders today.

I set the center aside in a very "safe and clean" place while I am working on the borders. I didn't want it covered in cat hair...can you guess what happened???

Putting the "patina" on the center I guess
